The Signature 12 turntable is Pro-Ject’s all-out assault on the analog high-end. This no-compromise approach to vinyl playback design commemorates Pro-Ject Audio’s 2 decades worth of industry-leading price-to-performance value. Each table takes 3 months to build and is entirely constructed and assembled by a team of two highly skilled craftsman – truly an artisan product! The Signature employs a sophisticated approach by combining the themes of mass-loading and magnetic decoupling. The main plinth supports a two-motor belt-driven flywheel system that is decoupled from, but drives the TPE-damped high-mass platter. The main plinth also houses the touch-screen that allows control of all operational parameters and ultra-precise speed adjustment. The sub-chassis is made of machined aluminum and sits beneath the platter. It’s responsible for supporting the platter’s magnetic suspension. “TPE Pillows” isolate the entire assembly and further reduce unwanted disturbance and vibration. The flywheel belt-drive system employs two motors and ensures vibration and noise-free mechanical operation for all moving parts. The advanced single-pivot 12″ tonearm can accommodate virtually any cartridge due to its wide range of adjustment capabilities and array of counterweights (included). Pro-Ject’s Xtension 12 incorporates over 20 years of experience in turntable design and manufacture. The Xtension 12 represents their latest technological efforts to address mass-decoupling and resonance reduction. Beginning with the mass-loaded magnetically floated sub-chassis and the precision balanced sandwich alloy platter (recycled vinyl/alloy), the foundation of this system weighs in at a super-heavy 55lbs. Additionally, Pro-Ject employs magnetic decoupling feet to thwart airborne or mechanical vibration from disturbing playback. This mass and isolation creates an environment of extremely low resonance allowing music to emerge from an ultra-silent black background. An AC motor with a two-step pulley drive with Electronic Speed Control maintains perfect pitch and rhythm resulting in inaudible wow, flutter and noise. Further reducing noise and vibration is the isolated Sorbothane mounting board for the 12″ carbon-fiber tonearm. The transparent acrylic plinth stands on three individually height-adjustable TPE-damped aluminium cones and carries the motor and the sub-chassis. The sub-chassis, made of Corian, rests on three magnetic fields. A magnetic sub-chassis suspension system avoids parasitic noise normally caused by conventional spring mechanism. A supplied spirit level allows easy adjustment of the sub-chassis. A quiet running AC motor unit drives the platter’s outside edge via a belt. It does incorporate an advanced DC-driven motor control, that ensures perfect speed stability and electronic speed change.
The resonance-optimised platter is a sandwich construction utilising a fine-balanced medium density fibre platter and a 4 mm thick flat-ground layer of vinyl and a screw-down metal record clamp. It runs on an inverted bearing with stainless-steel axle carrying a ceramic ball/ plate bearing. The headshell and armtube of high-end tonearm 9cc Evolution are fashioned from a single piece of carbon-fibre. A conical armtube avoids standing wave reflections. An Inverted tonearm bearing comprises four hardened stainless tips in ABEC 7 spec ballraces.
Supplied either with or without a premium Sumiko Amethyst Moving Magnet cartridge, hand-made in Japan by the cartridge experts at Sumiko, it can be ready to play within a few minutes of unboxing. The 10″ precision tonearm with carbon fiber armtube from Pro-Ject provides precise tracking of the record groove and efficiently redirects parasitic vibrations away from the cartridge into the mounting board. The headshell and armtube are fashioned from a single piece of carbon fiber in a conical shape in order to avoid standing wave reflections. Furthermore, the inverted bearing, arm bearing and counterweight are all designed to avoid and reject resonance. Complete adjustment of arm height, VTA and headshell azimuth is easy and reliable. The silicone-damped armlift is also adjustable to suit the tonearm’s height. Internal wiring is flexible high-purity copper from headshell to a 5-pin connector. Supplied Counterweight is Sorbotahane-damped: Suitable for cartridges weighing between 4-6g, 5-8g, 6-10g and 8-14g. Optional Counterweight: Suitable for cartridges weighing between 15-20g or 16-22g. Effective length: 10″. Mounting distance from platter to tonearm base: 238mm. Effective Mass: 8.5g. Overhang: 16mm. Weight 269g (without counterweight).
